What Most Solar Installers Job Listings Don't Tell You

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

Solar installation in Texas blends roofing and electrical skills, and the electrical tie-in must be done by or under a licensed electrician. Installers often start on the mechanical side, mounting racking and panels, and grow into electrical and system commissioning. Many employers value the NABCEP credential for higher pay. Compensation is usually hourly, sometimes with production bonuses, and skilled leads who manage installs and inspections earn well.

The trade is growing fast but is weather and incentive driven, so workload can swing. New hires are surprised that most of the day is physical rooftop work in Houston heat, carrying panels up ladders and working at height with fall protection. You read plans, mount racking to the roof without causing leaks, run conduit, and connect to inverters and the panel. Knowledge of both roofing waterproofing and electrical safety makes you valuable. Demand rises with energy costs and storm resilience interest, and the field rewards techs who cross both trades cleanly.

What to Expect Day-to-Day

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

An install crew starts by reviewing the system design and staging materials. You set up fall protection, then mount the racking to the roof, sealing every penetration so the roof stays watertight. Panels go up next, carried to the roof and secured to the rails in the planned layout.

The electrical stage ties it together. You run conduit, connect the panels, and wire to the inverter and the home's electrical panel, working under licensed supervision where required. Commissioning tests the system and confirms it produces power, and the job must pass utility and city inspection before it goes live. Coordination with the crew and the homeowner keeps the install on schedule. You document the work and clean the site. Expect heat, heights, heavy panels, and a mix of mechanical and electrical work through the day, balanced by the satisfaction of switching on a system that will power a home for decades.
