What Most Pool Cleaning Job Listings Don't Tell You

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

Pool service in Texas does not require a state license for routine cleaning and chemical balancing, though pool construction and some repairs fall under licensed trades. Handling pool chemicals safely is a real responsibility, and many companies train and certify techs on water chemistry. Pay is usually hourly or route based, and techs who add repair skills or grow their route earn more.

The work is route driven and highly seasonal in the Houston area. Summer is peak, with long days and heavy demand as pools get daily use. Winter slows to maintenance and repair. New techs are surprised by how much chemistry knowledge the job takes. Balancing chlorine, pH, and alkalinity protects both the pool and the swimmers. You drive a stocked truck, manage test kits and chemicals, and handle pumps, filters, and heaters. Recurring weekly accounts make income steadier than storm-driven trades, and a reliable tech keeps the same customers season after season.

What to Expect Day-to-Day

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

A pool tech runs a route of scheduled stops, often a dozen or more in a day. At each pool you skim the surface, brush the walls, vacuum the floor, and empty the baskets. Then you test the water and add chemicals to bring chlorine, pH, and alkalinity into range so the pool stays clear and safe.

Equipment checks are part of every visit. You inspect the pump, filter, and heater, backwash when needed, and flag anything that looks worn before it fails. Repair calls break the routine. You replace pump motors, patch leaks, and troubleshoot cloudy or green water. Communication with the homeowner is often a note left behind or a quick message, since many stops happen while no one is home. You track chemical use and service notes for each account. Expect sun, water, driving between stops, and the steady satisfaction of leaving a string of sparkling pools behind you.
