What Most Pest Control Job Listings Don't Tell You

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

Pest control in Texas is licensed by the Department of Agriculture. Technicians who apply pesticides need a certified applicator or technician license, which involves training hours and an exam. Many companies hire you first and sponsor the license while you learn. Pay is usually hourly with route bonuses or commission on new accounts, and sales-minded techs who grow their routes earn more.

The work is route based and seasonal. Summer brings the heaviest volume as mosquitoes, ants, roaches, and rodents thrive in Houston humidity. You drive a company vehicle, follow a daily stop list, and manage chemicals safely with the right protective gear. New hires are surprised by how much of the job is customer relationships and how much is physical, from crawling under homes to climbing into hot attics. Steady recurring contracts make this trade more predictable than storm-driven trades, and reliable techs build loyal routes that follow them for years.

What to Expect Day-to-Day

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

A technician starts the day by loading products and reviewing the route of scheduled stops. At each home or business you inspect for activity, identify the pest, and apply the right treatment inside, outside, and around the foundation. You set traps, treat entry points, and note conditions that invite pests back.

Customer communication runs through every stop. You explain what you found, what you did, and what the homeowner can do to help. Safety and documentation are constant. You follow label instructions, record products and amounts, and keep children and pets clear of fresh applications. Some visits are quick recurring services and others are involved, such as termite inspections, rodent exclusion, or crawl-space work. You finish by closing out each stop and confirming the next visit. Expect a lot of driving, physical inspection in tight and hot spaces, and the satisfaction of solving a problem that was stressing a customer out.
