What Most Garage Door Job Listings Don't Tell You

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

Garage door service in Texas does not require a state trade license, so companies train techs on the mechanics and safety of the systems. The work carries real hazard because torsion springs store enormous energy and can injure an untrained hand. Pay is usually hourly plus commission on repairs and new door sales, so techs who diagnose well and sell openers and doors earn more.

The trade is route based and steadier than weather-driven work, though storms and freezes cause spikes when doors and openers fail. New hires are surprised by how much of the job is precise mechanical work under tension, from winding springs to aligning tracks. You drive a stocked truck, carry an inventory of springs, rollers, and opener parts, and handle after-hours calls when a door traps a car inside. Clean workmanship and honest diagnosis build the reputation that fills a route, since a stuck garage door is an urgent problem for most homeowners.

What to Expect Day-to-Day

General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.

A tech runs a route of service calls with a truck stocked for common repairs. At each stop you test the door's balance and travel, inspect springs, cables, rollers, and the opener, and pinpoint the failure. The most common jobs are broken springs, frayed cables, worn rollers, and openers that no longer respond.

Safety governs the work. You release tension carefully, wind torsion springs to the correct count, and align tracks so the door runs smooth and quiet. Full door installs are bigger jobs, setting sections, hardware, and a new opener, then programming remotes and safety sensors. You explain options to the homeowner and quote repairs or replacement before you begin. Documentation and cleanup close each call. Expect precise mechanical work, real spring tension hazard, driving between stops, and the quick satisfaction of restoring a door that a family relies on every day.
